Widely used in Chinese cooking in baking, with duckling or put the spice into a slow cooking casserole. Also used as a spice in preparation of biryani and masala chai. Widely used in Malay and Indonesian cuisines too. A major ingredient in making of Pho, a Vietnamese noodle soup. 

It is one of the five spice in Chinese five-spice powder. It is also used to flavour alcoholic drinks such as pastis.
